Um my own background is in artificial intelligence and data mining. I’ve worked in this since about 1999 and for the last 10 years have been an associate editor for I Triple E transactions evolutionary computation so. They all need to make money and they all do this. Whatever things but I find I to believe the most pleasant to deal with because it’s somehow the most engineering.
The most scientific the most academic at least in my mind so. I’m very happy to do my associate editor role. I’m very happy to work with. I Triple E and go to the conference and so on. I think it’s a good bunch so the first thing I’ve got here is something about the audience and about when you when you actually maybe even before you write the paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbani the sort of general thing why are we actually writing a paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbani so first thing. And because that’s just my summary of the review sometimes the editable pastor. Don’t sometimes they don’t. That’s not usually any secret information in there. It’s just a summary basically so that’s why it’s often often. You don’t see that so when you get an email back from the system. I know that it says something like you. Know editors comments and the associate editors comment and it might look like blank. It doesn’t necessarily mean there wasn’t any comments it just means they weren’t passed on to you just because there was no additional information in this. Okay and then yeah like. I say the editor-in-chief makes the final decision. You get an email back and hopefully it’s Champaign rather than tears so okay let’s start talking about the nitty-gritty of all of this. And what makes my job as an editor interesting or frustrating. And how you can help with all of this. Let’s start before the first ones. I mean when I was more junior academic and I submit my own paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbanis. What always frustrated me was why does it take so long for people to review my paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbani kind of just give me the reviews and I kept bugging the editor. Where’s my review. Have figured this out. But sometimes an editor doesn’t ask you enough people and then the whole thing rumbles on and then you end up with one review and you can’t make a decision with one review and then you have to go back and that can really delay the whole thing so anyway. That’s just um one thing for you to know second one is my server already said actually. I asked five people. They all say yeah.
I’m gonna do this and then they actually don’t and I think we’re all guilty of this. I’m sure you’ve been asked to do a review and you probably at some point. Haven’t done it and there may have been a good reason. So my plea for you at this point is if you can’t do a review just let the editor know because then. I can reassign the thing. Don’t just not do it and it’s better to say no or early on say you look. I haven’t got time then. I can just fix it. Otherwise we’re all going to suffer in the end right. So just tell us and another thing and that usually happens. When you nominate the big fish as your reviewers the big fish are super busy. They have a good time. We need to review things so. I often I I learned. Don’t ask the big professors. They’re not the best people often but anyway it can happen. It can also happen when you and we come back to this sometimes you can suggest for reviewers to me and that’s actually a very important thing about talk more about in a minute. But when you suggest a reviewer and you might have asked him before are you okay to review my paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbani and they say yeah. I’ll do it. And then somehow this suggested reviewer they don’t actually do a very good review they just send a really brief thing back like saying all the paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbanis great you must publish it. I don’t know what sometimes what it is actually so it that makes kind of make it very tricky because of course you’ve wanna know whether the authors have fixed the particular thing that they wanted to fixing but then if you can’t get an out an answer out of that referee that’s often where I get stuck because it’s like right. This referee said whatever experiment. Sometimes you can’t be sure that’s okay just you have to give us your best. Your best shot why you think it works for example. Something hasn’t worked sometimes not clear why it hasn’t worked that maybe there’s a subject a future studied in right which is okay. But that’s what. I want to see that I want to see the overall results and it may be from one example. I want to see the detailed results something like that because I’d like to know the detail I’d like to know the nitty-gritty but then you can’t do nitty gritty for everything right so maybe for one example the detail you know the all the exactly how it worked all the performances to CPU times or whatever it is and then for the rest maybe just a summary table that could work and if you’re clever and can do figures that’s even better maybe you can have more data like this and and yeah. I talked about being descriptive already. So it’s it’s important to have at least one part where you’re exhausting.
It just explain how it is huh. Okay last thing. I’ve got here. Conclusion versus summary. It is hopefully something that somebody has to explain to your previously. It’s really quite simple. There are two different things basically. They’re not the same thing a conclusion. Or let’s start with a summary. At what point should you put in a reference and at what point you shouldn’t well first of all my rule would be if it’s more than half a sentence direct quote then you need to make it very clear it’s a direct quote put it in inverted commas put in italics and straight after that service words come from page number 7 from blah blah.
Whatever so that’s one thing after. It’s quite interesting because um at some point there was a big debate in the UK at least and I’m sure this debate will have been here and it hasn’t been here yet.
It will come here. It’s about who funds research and as a result who should have access to research and well maybe a surprise taxpayers fund research taxpayers. Are everybody so everybody should have access to the results. Sort of quite logical. But we don’t often talk about it like this because we feel like all. We have the traditional journal. Which is they you pay nothing. And then once the journal has to pay money. I had a pair article perineal subscription or whatever all we have to open access which usually means you pay everything in front and then afterwards it’s kind of nothing or most likely these days we’re actually this kind of field and that’s why I say it’s a little bit still not resolved.
We have some sort of mixture of you pay something somebody else. Pay something within a year you can make it in your repository. There’s an embargo period and it varies a little bit and so on and there’s a very good tool in the UK called Sherpa. You know this tool so because actually it can be really difficult to know these days which journal has exactly got which policy and there’s a tool called. Sherpa in the UK just I sure plain Google. You’ll find it and if you type into this tool the actual journal you’re interested in it will tell you exactly. What’s the policy for this journal. How many month is the embargo. Period is a green gold silver special somehow and and there’s a lot of variation still within one publishing house so within I Triple. E things are usually fairly consistent but the moment you move between things. It’s not and that can have a consequence for you if for example. Let’s say you’ve written the book chat. So actually it can be in universities interest to do this so they may actually pay for you but I like that. I don’t know if you know yet in how this works locally here so open access. Yes all four pays. We talked about this. The you can see. There is broadly three options in this and this is exactly what I just talked about. I don’t know I think I I’m not really been much to I Triple E access I mean I I just go through the my library portal usually and from my library portal. I end up in in some. I truly I totally portal. They must all be cleverly linked together somehow so. I’ve not directly going to actively accessed but of course I do usually end up someplace like this through the library portal and then if you’re subscribed to this you can just download the paper notionpress publishing, newspaper punjabi jagbani which is very handy any concert’ and so on and I’m sure our I Triple E colleagues can tell you more about how that works um okay impact factor. What exactly is the impact factor. It’s a little bit secondary because it depends a bit on the field right so but you know this can be useful for them. I’m not sure where to publish. Let’s have a look what’s possibilities basically so this is. I guess is what I’ve been saying you know. It’s more the reputation in the community. That’s important but it can be good just to have an impact and now sometimes you for some reason really wanna publish in a journal.
It hasn’t got an impact factor. It can happen because I actually know one or two editors of journals that just can’t be positive. Get an impact factor. They don’t believe in the system or they just don’t want to fill in the forms it’s necessary to get it. I know these people but I know they’re also very good scientists and the editorial board that journal is very good so that’s fine. I still published here but of course if you get sort of a random journal published in a sort of random country you know do I need to say anything else. Okay other ways to judge in your journals value and number of downloads. I’ve never used this myself.
