During their early phase, many researchers and students have questions: what is a journal book, and what is a conference? What are the differences between journal book papers and conference papers? Where should they publish? In a journal book or a conference. A conference is an event where researchers worldwide can participate and present their research before other researchers. The conferences enable researchers to meet with other researchers, seek feedback on their research, strengthen their network, and establish research collaborations. For the students in the early research phase, it is advisable to participate in the conferences, present their research, seek comments and suggestions, and establish a collaborative network. To participate in the conference, researchers draft the summary of the research work in 4-5 pages as per the predefined format and upload it to the conference website. Subsequently, the paper would be peer-reviewed by the review panel. The review process follows a fixed timeline. If the paper is accepted, authors will be invited to register and present their papers during the conference. The final paper will be published once the article is presented during the conference. The conference’s presented papers collection is often known as the conference proceedings. Whereas a journal book is a platform that publishes research articles periodically, it could be quarterly, monthly, or yearly volumes. The journal book articles are full-length and comprehensive compared to the conference papers demanding rigorous and extensive research work.

The communicated research papers to the journal books go through a rigorous review process, which is highly sophisticated than the conference review process. An article can go through multiple peer review iterations demanding major or minor revisions. The accepted papers will be published online within a few days or months of acceptance. In contrast with the conference papers, there is no physical gathering and presentations. All the communication would be through emails or the journal book’s website. Also, there will not be any registration fee for journal book papers compared with the conferences. However, if the authors decide to make their article accessible to all, they have to pay the open access fee. Finally, let us summarize a complete picture. Conference papers are the concise version of the research work, whereas journal book papers are the comprehensive and detailed versions. Conference papers are presented face to face through oral or poster presentations to the other researchers of the same field, whereas journal book papers are presented through written communication. The expectations from the conference papers are that they should be framed summarizing a brief of the ongoing research, whereas the journal book papers are expected to be In-depth and comprehensive. The optimal page length for the conference papers is around 4-5 pages, whereas journal book papers can be framed over a more significant number of pages. The high-quality journal book papers last approximately 8-10 pages. Furthermore, comprehensive review articles can cover 20-30 pages also. The complexity of the work presented in the conference paper would be medium, whereas, in a journal book paper, the outcome would be expected at the highest level of complexity. The review process for a conference is short; generally, it conducts one iteration of a review, whereas journal books employ an extremely rigorous review process, performing multiple review iterations demanding significant revisions. The timeline for a review process for a conference is fixed, and one can expect the outcome in 1-3 months, whereas the timeline for a review process for the journal books is flexible, and the outcome can be expected in 1-12 months.

The conferences are highly suitable for beginners and researchers looking to expand their network for knowledge and collaborations, whereas the journal books are suitable for intermediate and trained researchers. The conference papers carry low to medium weightage in the CV. In contrast, the journal book papers are rated high in CV and bring a more significant weightage compared with the conference papers. Authors have to register if the paper is accepted to participate in the conferences, whereas there is no registration fee for publishing the journal books. However, if authors want their article accessible to all, an open access charge is applicable in the journal books. Excellent conference papers may receive an invitation which can be extended for the journal books. However, the extended work of the presented conference paper is subjected to the further review process of the respective journal book.
