Tracing References
Hello my name is. Kauai and I'm from NUS libraries today. I'm going to show you a method of searching for lots and lots of information publications by just using one journal article. This method is called tracing references. So let's say that your lecturer has given you an article and it's called invisibility cloak by professor. Rowling you read this article and discover that you know you really liked this article you really like to find out more about this invention. What should you do well. You could turn to the last page of this article where you will find a list of references. What are references references are for example a book or a journal article or a conference paper. But whatever they are there are publications that professor. Rowling used as the foundation of her research on the invisibility cloak. If you were to search for every single one of these publications or trace them you would be doing what we call a backward search now a backward search such as this or probably real well. Let's say she uses about 30 references. You will have found 30 publications that professor only used now. Let's just say that. This article was published in the year 2013. All these publications that you are tracing here are likely to be published before 2013. What happens if you decide you know. I like to know a little bit more. Can I find other publications that have been on this research on invisibility cloak after 2013. Or should we do how about if we look for publications that has been citing this invisibility cloak article now. What are citing publications citing publications are the same they are books journal articles and Conference papers and so forth these books and journal articles would have reference lists that cite this particular article. Let's just say if you trace every single one of these you want to be doing a forward search and your forward search me possibly you about 50 publications. So if you were to trace 30 publications here 50 publications here you would then have a total of 80 publications great right because from one.
Journal article we've got 80. Surely there is a method of searching for this 80 in a simplest and easiest way we would like to suggest that you try going to the NUS library's portal and over the NUS library's portal. You may say you may find um two databases. Scopus and web of science in these two databases try doing a article title search. A article title search is very precise it would likely bring up one record that is of the invisibility cloak. And in that record you would find hyperlinks to those thirty references very easily and clickable of course and then you were also fine the fifty that have been citing this invisibility cloak article so in one database with one record. It's easy to find all these journal articles which are because they are all linked. So what have we done here today. We've done a backward search we've done a forward search and with these two searches and using a database. You've got your 80 publications a lot more when you first started up with. We hope you find this article. We hope you find this method useful. Thank you and goodbye.
