Researcher profiles
I have a LinkedIn page with the updates of my research, and I have ResearchGate page which I'm using mainly to follow other people at the moment, of course. Engaging in social media so there's lots out there LinkedIn... And there's lots of resources to actually show you how to best use LinkedIn to optimize your own profile as well as your research. And there's other ones like ResearchGate and Academia.edu. I think it's good to be across all the relevant ones for your area. If you want to be a perfect researcher, the most important quality of what you want to have in yourself is to communicate. And you need to have this interest of learning new things. So these kinds of memberships help you a lot because they connect a lot of researchers in the same platform. It's not necessary that you need to work with a particular group of people who are in your university or your school no. If you have the idea of expanding your knowledge in science, you need people from different areas. As far as Instagram or Facebook and being able to see who these people are outside the conference as well and what they are showcasing both academically and socially... So I always have to keep a keen eye on social media as well. There are a lot of different ways as an academic that you can increase the impact of your work. One thing that I think is really important to do is to have a Google Scholar profile. So Google Scholar may not be the place where you go to for your metrics something like Scopus or Web of Science is obviously going to be more accurate but it is really important to have a verified Google Scholar profile. There's lots of different tools you can use so ResearchGate, Academia.edu, Mendeley all these different tools that you might want to use to create an academic profile, and also places where you can connect with other researchers so you can get in touch with other people that you may wish to collaborate with in the future. Obviously there's also your social media type of things that you might want to use in an academic manner, depending on your field.
You might want to look at which social media tool or which tools such as ResearchGate or Academia where are the most people in your field congregating, and then choose to use that tool rather than having a profile everywhere. You're probably better off thinking about where the best place to be for your particular research interest is, and concentrating efforts there whether that's Twitter or whether that is ResearchGate. What I think is quite important in our work besides research itself is creating a network so getting in contact with people and talking with people it's a key factor. It's something you have to do. And I probably didn't realise it at the beginning how important it is even if people were telling me all the networks you create during your PhD are going to help you for the rest of your career. But now that I'm a year into the project, I'm realising how important it is and even if I'm just asking question I need information and through the people I met I can actually go and ask them directly and if they can't help me directly they can actually tell me who to contact to get the best information or the best answer.
