Red Bull 400 Race Vlog & Recipe
Hands are getting sweaty. I'm actually getting kind of nervous because this is cray I make it that's all I can think about right now. This is what you say was the highest 100-meter deepest deepest 400 meters in the world. Utah yay back again. Just like in grub time and I go try to find something to eat. Wow this is the waffle soup this is the Chicot with chorizo huzzah. I'd like a Southwest peppery taste and mine's me a lot of like chili okay. Yeah you got three minutes do you and offer to share at all we just look up oh. I guess Jesse's doing his meal because he enjoyed it shoot now. I'm excited but this that run look at that hands are getting sweaty. I'm actually getting kind of nervous because it's more like this. I didn't know it was just straight up and down. Wait till you see this ski Joe what I just saw from the window. It looks like dinner. I don't know what I'm gonna do. I'm breathing hard walking from the parking lot so I'm not officially scared or whatnot but it is a little bit different than I expected. Let me show you. This is crazy you could see just like my legs right now. There's so much pressure on them already. I'm not even what ten meters in and it's already like this and I'm breathing hard and I pray I make it that's all I can think about right now. It just got real for me like literally it just got rid of it. We're gonna try to just walk up here just it's so steep. Oh my god are you kidding me where is Jay Jay's sofa look at that a walk of shame or what does a walk of shame that this is not even into the race we just feel bad another like hundred meters to go and that one's pretty steep but it's just gonna be upstairs you can't even see the hill more team know 10 minutes. I'm a question not as daunting right. I mean it's still donkeys throw out of breath and took off some of the pressure though doing it I wouldn't trying to be that doing a tube and then get up and go in the food I max a creature if I have it though so since I found a good spot already public and I just go there I'm dead just because I hate being disappointed I go to places nine times out of ten.
I'm pretty sure how they're gonna go in the same spot we'll find out just check out this view this is like. Utah is always postcard. Ready day - lets go. I'm just gonna drive you guys. Tell me we're five seas bro unless you is the chia pudding and whoo put it out goodness never ever seen out. What kind of person looks that good. XR to eat and french candies from Australia. Definitely oh my god it's like rosewater he's like rosewater thank you very much. I really love how thoughtful you are to the presentation of the food. It means a whole lot. Listen that's how it came to strong so I'd look towns like this because you kind of get lost and I'd like like these different stores that everything is different. But where's that sock store. I want to go in the sock store. Hey all right. Sauk City oh my gosh they've got the football teams too we're going to have college you know the Longhorns intellectually that highest-grossing brand in the nation that's a these. I definitely need right here to punch okay crush. I definitely want to get the Brock Obama today is through Queen to recognize. Oh headed back out to the Olympic Park right now. We're meeting up with this exactly the name is Dylan. Bowman he's a Red Bull athlete and I just an introduced to this sport. It's called ultra running so you've heard of marathon with rid of that ultra running his leg. I think it's 50 miles or more. They run at one. Yeah this guy has been doing it for the past couple of years if he acts he holds a record of none of the races in. California where you weren't on the coast. I saw the video online. I was at a super inspired. He was running in a whole bunch of rain and statement was freezing cold and he got up at like 2:00 a.m. At 3 a.m. to start the race it was around the world. I mean there's a whole circuit forest all the ultra running and they just do that every time.
I use the treadmill that call to ultra running. It's the ultimate for me just to do two times my old truck anyway. He's doing the race tomorrow so. I'm probably not gonna come in first place just because you know he's ready but I may come in a really close second right right yo. Thanks JD today. I got one thing I got one person to believe in me in no comment from Jesse. Better say nothing at all. Oh you're such a hater man you know what. I want you to line up one by one and I will accept your apologies tomorrow. I want you to line up and say Kevin I was wrong. Talk about the fitment could I apologize in the back of the see you man. Thanks for coming out. It was beautiful beautiful place. I bet you see it. You know like statistic all the time right and whenever you're running and doing these different trails and races yes. Unfortunately that is true this is my home environment and Scopus had a small spot upstairs on this roof so we can overlook all the city. I also got us some food. We have a better conversation when food is involved in my feet. I'm just saying sir I'm biased. I know that you're a vegetarian ish so here's a grain bowl and here is this awesome green juice thank you sir. Thank You max gray and I appreciate you coming out here and meeting with me. This is the first time I've actually heard of ultrarunning is this is a brand new sport or something or what is it. No it's not but I'm glad I got to introduce it to you. Know sports been around for you know 30 40 years it started back in. I think it was 1977. California named Gordie Ainsley had signed up for a hundred-mile horse ride. His horse came out lame and so he decided to do the race on two feet and he successfully did it and the next year two people did and they cuddle and then it continued to grow and snowball from there. The the sports sort of came into my life eight or nine years ago and changed everything for me. A sub ignorant question but have to ask is the race all at one time. Do you split it up and do like 20 on this day and then the rest of the next day or it's one shot you know and obviously the the goal is to go as fast as you can right so you minimizes your stopping.
You know to the best of your abilities right so most of the races. I do are between fifty and a hundred miles so but like a fast 50 mile race would be like six hours and like a fast hundred mile er would be like fifteen sixteen hours and then there's races that are much more mountainous so slower course it can take 24 plus takes a lot of red ball it takes a whole ever been erased that you've done where it's mile at 13 mile 12 very early on that you're thinking well. I kind of want to stop. What did you tell yourself to keep going. That's something that happens fairly often right. It's sort of the worst case scenario especially when you have such a far distance to go because inevitably that's what you're thinking about usually it's one of a few issues that you have to address in order to feel better right. It's either. You're low on calories you're low on fluids you're low on electrolytes right you just have to problem-solve identify the correct problem and mitigate it before it gets too late what do you tell yourself in those moments where you feel like you want to stop yeah. I think the thing that I rely on or that I lean on for motivation is knowing how many people are out there rooting for me right. And so just knowing that you have that support system behind you and wanting to not let them down when you start a race you know it's gonna be hard at some point right. Yeah and if you quit because it's hard and what's some point of even showing up top power foods for your diet grains and greens right so yeah just like this. This is something that my wife will make at home like three times a week right. So oftentimes we have big salads with rice and nuts and good olive oils. That's a very typical dinner for us for breakfast. I'll usually have you know a piece of toast and I get this really good bread from back home in Marin County and have you know just almond butter and banana.
Something like that. It'll be sort of my pre-workout fuel and then after workout usually have a smoothie of some kind so that's definitely on the power food list you know there's some guys who sort of err more on the side of the high fat low carb. I've never been able to. It's never worked for me right and part of figuring out how to perform at your best is to figure out the nutrition that helps you do so in fact that's probably the hardest thing to figure out as an athlete and my sport is is how to eat appropriately to fuel your your competition and for me that means you know pretty heavily carb diet party last words for me for this event that could be. I guess maybe the the catalyst for something else yeah. Have you ever heard of the idea of type 2 fun no. It's fun that's only fun. In retrospect right so type. 1 fun is what we're doing right now like we're eating food we're talking. This is fun in the moment right tomorrow is gonna be fun. But only in retrospect right so embracing that mentality and knowing it's gonna be hard but it's gonna be so worth it and by the time you get to the top you're gonna be so so psyched on your effort. That is brilliant. I love that I love that you know I feel that that's I pretty much have type to fund every time I step into the gym getting my butt kicked by trainers somebody. It's not it's it's fun but it's not really fun in that moment you know and then afterwards are you thinking like well. I really the results are there. I feel better you know so yeah so tomorrow's gonna be type 2 fun tomorrow some type to fun and I appreciate you. Thanks so much thank you tomorrow morning. See alright men so that was fun surprisingly. I'll gonna do one actually got me a little bit more calm for the race two things that helped me out so far walk in the course yesterday and talking the Dylan today type to fun type to fun tomorrow. I'm going to anticipate enjoying it much later.
Enjoying the memory of doing the race so night before the race so I'm gonna go in here to this grocery store and get a couple things. I've got a sweet so I can put stuff in the fridge. The main thing. I'm worried about is just cramping because it feels so steep so objective is to neck cramp so I'm gonna grab a couple of bananas so whenever you start cramping up people try to give you a banana technically. So we're not gonna help out once you already cramping but it can help to prevent cramping with these two. You get the healthy fats. My this right here is my favorite water. I don't even know why but it tastes much better than this crazy cuz I don't even know that water good water really has a taste but it's essential water it tastes really good next time. I'll get a basket from. Pine bars marks bars man. I've been loving these recently and semi central water. Look it is 5:30 getting up to eat this banana and this isn't nuts a seat bar and start drinking some water the water is gonna really help out with the altitude today. So that's the most important thing that's one of the most important things just the breathing and the water really helps out with that so making sure that. I'm really hydrated. Of course the potassium hearing in the banana so. I don't like to be super full. Would I do anything when I get up in the morning and work out high to work out an empty stomach. I just perform better that way. I just hate feeling bloated and full and heavy with our jig so I'm eating well enough in advance so make sure that can digest but also loading up with the whole bunch of potassium and electrolytes. A goal is to down this entire 50 50 ounces before we leave for the race which is around like 7:30 we're gonna get up and leave and drive out there to the race put on my shirt. I got just got suited and booted about to go downstairs and meet the guys first off. I'm really nervous like I'm actually really nervous. Not scared about the course per se but I just really want to do well.
This is the same feeling that I had when I first started doing like a lot of cooking shows and morning shows and TV work. It's just. I get like this nut in my stomach because I just I just want to do well putting this on today putting this shirt on. I actually feel like a little kid because I'm reliving like childhood memories. You know when you think about like you want to be like this athlete and have like a brand on your back or you want to be like for a certain team this right now. Is this moment for me so. I legit feel like a legit athlete like you. So gotta give me some confidence cuz uh I'm ready. Let's go it's race day baby race day hey. I'm grateful for everything that you've done but if you could just add my name to the back of this shirt next time I'd be a little great. I'm actually really happy. I'm really excited. Yeah it's gonna be a good day it's gonna one day so I don't have to run alone thankfully I'm a boy Mattia from Dallas with me. Visit here right now but he saw that. I was out here and said well I said what are you doing in town on your job or what I said he said. Come up and do this 400 something but we are reliable my most reliable form. I hear ya so. He's actually tried to get people to actually do this race with them. Play over a year right. Yeah every single person bags out. They saw this hill. This is what you say. It was the highest 100 meter deep. Its steepest 400 meters in the world ways yeah any parting words last time to fun. I loved it. I'm taking that with me. I'm stealing their hard all right here we go let's go this is the first qualify for the MS. I don't do that ever again ever I got it under seven minutes right now. I've already apologized. I feel like it's not gonna be type tool until maybe like after lunch right email on Monday to see how that type to benefit did okay Lucia. We're gonna hold our breath on them when I go to the office but uh I appreciate you man.
That was a huge channel for myself for doing this and thanks for your words. Carry that with me too fun guys. Yeah and y'all wouldn't want it. Don't don't walk away now y'all wouldn't want in the car laughing that cocaine I even though I was on life support at the great haha I was on my last breath. We thought we were gonna have it. I say this without exaggerating. That was the work that they were felt in my entire life. And the fact that Dillon was just hey. So how wasn't it. Yeah it was good you know. I got a lot looking the tank. It's just you know it's good fun rate really so just like that. The race is over. It's a crazy that I actually spent time training for this. For what like seven and a half minutes and it might feel like recipes right like you'll then an hour in the kitchen two hours in the kitchen with your meal. Prep or something. But you're gonna eat in about five minutes but you do it all over again and again and again and because I love it and I'm passing over I thought the type to foam was gonna be kicking in maybe tomorrow but I'm having typed to go in right now in this enjoying it. Is that right there. I just did that all right just like that. We are out happened to be going back home back to my country attacks alright guys so just now getting settled back in here to Dallas and it was an incredible trip one thing that I'd love to do after any trip though is a lot of people right some people go and exercise they hit the gym. I do all those things but I also like to get back into my own kitchen this is where I feel safe. This is where I feel free and creative and I like to take a little bit of what I enjoyed the most on my trips and try to recreate it. That's what I think is the beauty of travel and the whole purpose of travel. We want as much variety as possible to enrich our wellness journey. So that's always my take away whenever. I come back from a trip like what did I learn. And how can I apply it to my life thinking about what Dylan said about having a high carb energy diet largely plant dominant and then the amazing food spray that I have at five seeds.
I know what I want to make. And that's the greens and grains Bowl even with your normal diet your regular diet that you had. That's healthy. Part of the journey and becoming an athlete and being physically active is finding out what works for you even though. I know I'm gonna be sore in a few days. I'm still incredibly proud of myself because in the back of my mind when I was running that race I just heard this boy say don't stop. Don't stop moving your feet and it reminded me of what Dylan said just like in any race it's gonna be tough and challenging and if you quit and what's the point of even doing the race and I just heard that so clearly and it resonated with me that like Kevin you can't stop moving your feet and what a metaphor for like - and no matter what happens in our life. The most important thing is if there will be setbacks it will be challenging you will you will get up to your own. Red Bull 400 Hill but whatever you do no matter how hard it is. Don't stop moving your feet.
I'm pretty sure how they're gonna go in the same spot we'll find out just check out this view this is like. Utah is always postcard. Ready day - lets go. I'm just gonna drive you guys.
