Keele University - School of Law - Undergraduate modules - Mooting

Hi I'm Alex and I'm a third-year student at Keele. I do straight law and I'm here to talk about mooting today. At Keele there's a number of opportunities to moot, firstly there is the first year competition. So in your first year you can have a real experience of mooting. It's a three round competition. It's led by students actually as well which gives it a really really nice feel and this competition has gone really from strength to strength last year. The first year competition was judged by a barrister, a head of a local law school and one of the senior lecturers at Keele and the standard of advocacy was actually excellent and moving on from this, we also have the second year and third year competition at Keele which is often called the upper school moot. This competition again is about developing your advocacy and last year I was lucky enough to get to the final and the final was actually held in the Supreme Court before Lord Hodge and this is an opportunity that is quite unique to Keele, not every University offers this opportunity. To go into the Supreme Court and moot before Lord Hodge was an incredible opportunity. Was also very nerve-wracking but it's something that I've been able to talk about on nearly every application I've sent. I recently had an interview and they said to me how was mooting in the Supreme Court before Lord Hodge, it's been a real topic of conversation for me and this is one of the reasons I've really enjoyed Keele because they they go above and beyond for their students. It's not just the finals going to be in the moot court room, they go above and beyond. They look to see what other opportunities are available for people and if you come to Keele, you can be safe in the knowledge that you will be nurtured and you will be given guidance on everything you want to do and there is so many opportunities to excel. If you want to be a barrister or a solicitor mooting is just one of them opportunities and if you come to Keele you can really grab those opportunities with both hands.
