Communications - Finding a Journal Article

Hello, my name is Bob Matthews, I am a Librarian at Hudson Valley Community College. In this video I am going to demonstrate how to do the research assignment for the communications course. To begin your research select Academic Search Complete, at the very top select choose databases. The way it is set right now you are searching just one database and I want you to search a number of different databases. On the top in the right hand column select humanities source, a little bit below it select PsycArticles, and below that select Psychology and Behavioral Sciences collection and below that select Social Sciences. Across the way second from the bottom, click on ERIC. So instead of searching one database we are searching six databases and say ok. For some assignments it is going to be very important to pay attention to the dates that the articles were published. To narrow the dates even further under published dates you could put in, for example 2010 to 2015, to get the most recent material for your research paper. On the bottom select scholarly, or peer review journal, so you get really good material for your paper. On the top select a field, open that window up, and change it to TI title. The topic that we are going to discuss,we are going to research, I am going to take from this handout, I hope you are familiar with it, and notice the idea or concept of schemata is in chapter 3 of Perception. That is going to help us in just a moment. In the title field find the term schemata, and I found 489 articles with schemata, and that's really too many to look for, so I am going to take the title of the chapter Perception and enter it to see if i can narrow it down and now i have narrowed it down and I have 87. I am just going to see if I can narrow it one more time by saying find perception in the title of the article and send it again, and now I have 8. I will go through these 8 articles until I can see if I can find an article that I like a lot. When I find an article that I like I am going to go right to the PDF file and select the PDF file.

When I find an article I am going to use I am either going to save it to my H drive, or to my flash drive, or I am going to print the article. After I have saved or printed the article I am going to go to the gold sheet of paper on the right hand side that says cite, select it, then I am going to select either my APA citation or my MLA citation. I'll mark it, copy it, and put it in a new word document. If for example, none of these articles work for my paper I am going to take out perception and put in the term communication, to see if i can find an article that I can work with in my paper, in this case I found 3 articles. If I find an article I like that's not full text I'll click on check for full text to see if I can find the article, and in this case it did find the article, I was lucky. I hope that you found this short demonstration to be of assistance to you for your research paper. If you need further help please come to the reference desk and a Librarian will assist you.
