2010-2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class review | Consumer Reports

The mercedes-benz e-class has always been a very popular choice for those looking for a solid luxury sedan. When you first get into the e-class you'll notice some of the controls. Well they're a little atypical. The seat controls. We're here there on the door. That's actually pretty common with mercedes-benz and they actually don't work too badly over there but once you start the car and you put it in here. You'll find there's no console shifty here it's actually here up up on the stock and it's not traditional stock shifter it always returns the center so you put it down into drive. That's okay returns the center but the problem we've had is that sometimes when you put into. Park and cars not completely stopped. We find the car actually starts rolling off. It's not that solid. Lock where you feel. The car goes in the park again. Takes some getting used to mercedes-benz controls. Well they've always been a bit complicated and this time they've changed them around. There's still a bit intricate just a lot of menus for instance if you have navigation screen up and you want just the radio to push down this knob here choose the audio system and now you can adjust the radio if you want to adjust the volume you can move up this knob. That's higher up. In the dash. There are some hard keys in the dash though that do make some of it a little bit easier. For instance you can just press the radio button to call up those menus and also we like the fact that this hard keys for presets but still it's a bit distracting and in our opinion you have to take your eyes off the road too long to access those controls. The interior welds really nicely finished very luxurious. The materials they're all top-notch and fit its impeccable. The seats they're not leather but they might as well be because they look really nice and they're very comfortable very supportive the rear seat well. It's fairly roomy and pretty comfortable. But it's not any better than you might see in a normal family sedan.

However the optional rear sunroof does make it feel more open and spacious than it is the 3.5 liter v6 mated with 7-speed automatic transmission delivers plenty of acceleration and shifts very smoothly however it does drink a fair amount of premium fuel. Mercedes-benz does offer a diesel engine which provides much better fuel economy especially on the highway as for handling. Well the steering at first feels pretty good in fact on center. It feels very tight and it's nicely weighted however as you get into that corner steering really didn't give you much feedback. It feels a bit vague and numb. It just feels like you're very disconnected with what the tires are doing. And that lack of feedback became even more of an issue when we put it. Through the avoidance maneuver as you got to the limit. It was really hard to tell what the tires were doing. And how close they were. It made it very hard to thread that course and that's really shame because the car actually is fairly capable at corners flat and has decent grip in our brake tests the distances they weren't great and we actually expected shorter distances. Given the performance nature of the all-season tires on our test car. The ride was pretty smooth especially in the highway. It's a very smooth sail. But as the road surface gets worse some of those imperfections they come through into the cabinet certainly a lot. More than the last generation of the e-class. There's plenty of safety features on the car. Standard on every class is pre-safe the system that prepares the cabin if the car senses an impending crash. Another standard feature is a tension assist and this is a systems designed to alert the driver if they're driving when they're drowsy. Some of the options are lean departure warning blind spot detection and even a night-vision camera however all the safety options to raise the price of the car quite a bit and some of the most basic safety features like good headlights were a bit subpar. The low beam performance from the standard halogen headlights was poor.
